Every figure and outlet named below was checked directly, including a deliberate second search for wire-service and Belgian/Flemish coverage — not just for the presence of the story, but for its absence. Where a search returned nothing, that is stated as "no coverage found," not "proven suppressed." Search-engine incompleteness is a real limitation, disclosed rather than glossed over.1
The Silence After the Fraud
In 2022, a forensic image analysis in Science found that one of the most cited Alzheimer's papers in history had been built on digitally altered photographs. Sixteen years of dominant research funding, a formal retraction, a scientist's resignation, and a separate criminal case that collapsed without explanation all followed — every step of it a matter of public record. What this piece traces is not the science itself (see Sixteen Wasted Years for the causes that actually survive scrutiny, and Trust the Science for this case alongside thirteen others). It's the second, quieter story: how little of this ever reached the general public, and what that gap says about who gets to hear when the institutions built to protect them get it wrong.
1. What the Images Actually Showed
Sixteen Years on a Photograph
In 2006, Sylvain Lesné, then a new researcher in Karen Ashe's lab at the University of Minnesota, published a paper in Nature identifying a protein called Abeta*56 as the direct cause of dementia-like symptoms in mice. It was cited more than 2,300 times and helped keep amyloid-clearing approaches dominant in Alzheimer's research for years — NIH spending on amyloid-mentioning projects alone ran about $1.6 billion in FY2021-2022, roughly half of all federal Alzheimer's funding that year. In July 2022, Charles Piller's investigation in Science, independently verified by two additional image-forensics experts, found the paper's key Western blot images — the physical evidence the protein existed at all — had been digitally spliced and duplicated. Twenty of Lesné's papers were flagged as suspect, with more than 70 instances of possible image tampering across them.
Nature formally retracted the paper in June 2024, citing "excessive manipulation, including splicing, duplication and the use of an eraser tool." No one knows why Lesné did it — he has never publicly commented. What is documented is the incentive structure around him: as a new researcher, identifying "the" molecule behind Alzheimer's in a Nature paper was directly career-making, and NIH funding tied specifically to Abeta*56 research followed — about $774,000 through 2012 alone, part of more than $7 million in Alzheimer's-related grants he received through 2022.
2. The Co-Author Who Didn't Go Quiet
Karen Ashe Redid the Experiment Herself
Karen Ashe, the paper's senior and corresponding author, said she had no knowledge of the manipulation until it was brought to her attention around 2022 — and, as corresponding author, took responsibility regardless. She signed the 2024 retraction; Lesné was the only author who refused. In 2023-2024, using new techniques and without Lesné, she independently repeated the original 2006 experiment and published the result in March 2024. The University of Minnesota separately flagged four more papers for retraction — three involving Abeta*56, one co-authored by Ashe — together cited roughly 600 times.
This matters for the shape of the story: not everyone involved stayed silent or defensive. The retraction, the redone experiment, and the flagged papers all happened because someone with real standing in the field chose accountability over protecting a career-defining result.
3. Who Actually Reported It
The instinct, once a story like this surfaces, is to assume either a media blackout or a media frenzy. Neither is quite accurate. What actually happened sits in between, and the specific shape of it is the point.
Science broke the story in July 2022. Within days, outlets that maintain their own dedicated science reporters — CNBC, Forbes, NBC News, ScienceAlert — ran their own independent pieces. That's real, substantive coverage, not nothing. What could not be confirmed, despite a direct search: a dedicated New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, or BBC report on the July 2022 exposure itself. A 2025 New York Times essay exists — written by Charles Piller himself, promoting his book, not independent Times reporting on the original story.
More telling: no Reuters, AP, or AFP wire coverage was found. That's the detail that explains the rest of the gap better than any theory of deliberate suppression. Regional and non-English-language newspapers worldwide overwhelmingly receive international science stories through wire syndication, not by assigning their own reporter to follow foreign scientific journals. No wire pickup means no default pathway to local papers anywhere outside outlets that happened to have their own science desk paying attention that week. Flemish and Belgian mainstream outlets — VRT, De Standaard, De Morgen, Het Nieuwsblad — returned zero hits in direct search. Dutch-language coverage exists, but only in a medical trade journal (NTVG, aimed at physicians) and a small health website, neither reaching a general audience.
Absence in a web search is not proof of absence in print archives, which are unevenly indexed. The finding here is "no findable coverage" in Flemish/Belgian mainstream press and in wire-service archives — a real and checkable pattern, not a claim that no outlet anywhere ever ran a single line about it.
4. The System Now Policing "Misinformation"
The same years this story unfolded in — 2021 through 2025 — are the same years major platforms, health agencies, and press institutions built formal infrastructure to flag, label, and remove health "misinformation," with amyloid-skeptical and fraud-adjacent claims sometimes caught in that net alongside genuine nonsense. The institutions positioned as the arbiters of what counts as reliable health information did not themselves prioritize wide distribution of a confirmed case of image fabrication that shaped sixteen years and tens of billions of dollars of the field they claim to police. That is not an accusation of coordinated concealment — the wire-service gap above is a more mundane, structural explanation. It is a documented asymmetry worth sitting with: confirmed institutional fraud traveled less efficiently through the media system than officially labeled "misinformation" does.
5. Not an Isolated Incident
A Second Case, a Different Company, the Same Whistleblower
Cassava Sciences is a separate company developing a different experimental Alzheimer's drug, simufilam. In 2021, Matthew Schrag — the same neuroscientist who later flagged the Lesné images — was paid $18,000 by an attorney representing short-sellers with a financial stake in Cassava's stock falling, to review the company's published data. In the course of that work, he separately identified the issues in Lesné's papers. Science had his findings independently verified by two other image analysts, so the payment does not undermine the analysis itself — but it belongs in this account for transparency, and it reinforces the wider point: this wasn't caught by the field's own internal review process. It came from an unrelated financial dispute that happened to run through the same evidence.
In June 2024, Hoau-Yan Wang — a CUNY professor and Cassava science advisor — was criminally indicted: major fraud against the United States, two counts of wire fraud, false statements, over alleged falsification of data used to secure $16 million in NIH grants. Criminal prosecution for scientific data manipulation is itself rare. In May 2025, CUNY's own internal investigation concluded that misconduct "could not be proven" — not that it didn't happen, that it couldn't be established. Then, on 23 October 2025, after a jury had already been selected, the Department of Justice dismissed the indictment with prejudice — permanently barring the charges from ever being refiled — without stating a public reason. Legal commentators called the timing "highly unusual." Separately, and unaffected by the dismissal, the SEC settled with Cassava Sciences itself in September 2024 over disclosure failures; the company paid a penalty without admitting or denying wrongdoing.
6. What It Actually Cost
Set the funding and career numbers aside for a moment. The newer generation of amyloid-targeting drugs — built on the broader amyloid hypothesis the field never fully abandoned, not literally derived from Lesné's specific paper, and that distinction should stay precise — carries a documented, named side effect: ARIA, amyloid-related imaging abnormalities, meaning brain swelling and bleeding. Clinical trials found ARIA in 12-35% of treated patients versus 3-13% on placebo across aducanumab, lecanemab, and donanemab. Trial deaths have been linked to several of these drugs. Aducanumab received accelerated FDA approval in 2021 on weak efficacy data and was pulled from the market in February 2024. All three carry an FDA black box warning — the agency's highest safety alert. Real patients received real drugs, with a real risk of brain bleeding, built on a research foundation partly constructed from fabricated images and defended for over a decade before anyone with the standing to check it was allowed to.
The fraud was documented, retracted, and resigned over. None of that is in dispute. What's worth noticing is the second failure sitting quietly behind the first: a story with this much at stake — patient harm, tens of billions in public funding, a formal retraction, a resignation, a criminal indictment that collapsed without explanation — moved through the world's information system less completely than a single viral rumor does on an average afternoon. No conspiracy is required to explain that. A missing wire story and an absent regional press pickup do the explaining well enough on their own. That, on its own, is the story worth sitting with.
