This article grew out of a long research process through IG Farben, the "Brussels EU," apocryphal texts, and Mesopotamian tablets — some of it published elsewhere on this site, some of it still private. What follows is not that research. It is the method that kept it from becoming either credulous or paranoid.
The Undisturbed Mind
Somewhere between "I don't want to know" and "everything is connected" is a narrow, sane path — and almost nobody who goes digging into institutional history, ancient texts, or claims about hidden power stays on it. Most fall off one side or the other: they stop looking, or they stop discerning. This article is the terrain map for staying on the path. It is built from a real, worked example — a research thread that ran through Nazi-era corporate history, an EU-as-Babylon documentary, apocryphal scripture, Sumerian tablets, and a 2025 mitochondrial biology paper — with the specific claims that held up and the specific claims that didn't, side by side. Then it gets to the part that actually matters: the philosophical tools, two thousand years old, that explain why this kind of research destabilizes people who do it without them.
1. Four Tiers, Worked
The single most useful habit in this kind of research is refusing to let every claim carry the same weight. Below are six claims from one real research thread, each checked against its primary source, each landing in a different tier. Notice that the tiers do not correlate with how dramatic the claim sounds.
Held Up: A War Criminal Chaired Bayer's Board
Convicted at Nuremberg in 1948 for mass murder and enslavement, released in 1950, elected chairman of Bayer AG's supervisory board in 1956 — a position he held until 1964. Checked against Bayer's own corporate history archive and the Nuremberg trial record. It holds, without qualification.
Held Up: The 2025 Mitochondria Study
A real, peer-reviewed paper with a working DOI: weak static magnetic fields raised mitochondrial energy output up to 40% in a narrow bell-shaped window. Checked against the paper itself, not just the social-media post that circulated it. It holds — but a second claim riding alongside it (that this paper is "a death blow to Orch-OR theory of consciousness") does not appear anywhere in the paper. Two claims, same source, different tiers.
Did Not Hold: The Bayer "170 Reichsmark" Letter
A frequently repeated quote — Bayer allegedly negotiating a price per woman for Auschwitz drug trials — turns out to have no corroborating trace in the Bayer, Auschwitz, or IG Farben Nuremberg trial archives, according to a dedicated archival investigation. Widely believed, often cited, and unverifiable. Left out entirely rather than repeated with a caveat.
Did Not Hold: Nibiru in the Sumerian Tablets
Not merely unfashionable — specifically checked against the cuneiform. A scholar with a doctorate in Hebrew and ancient Semitic languages reviewed every known occurrence of the term Sitchin translated as a twelfth planet; it refers to Jupiter, occasionally Mercury, the god Marduk, or a star, on a yearly cycle, never a planet beyond Pluto on a 3,600-year orbit. The central visual evidence, a cylinder seal, has been identified by art historians as an ordinary offering scene. This is a translation claim, and the translation does not hold.
Circumstantial: Vaccine Batch Variation
Four countries, same research lineage, statistically significant batch-to-batch variation in adverse event rates — real, replicated, published. What it does not establish: intent, or even the mechanism. A fifth study using different surveillance methodology found no comparable effect. The plainest explanation offered by the original researchers is manufacturing inconsistency under compressed emergency timelines, not design. Real signal, unresolved cause — the tier exists precisely for findings like this.
Circumstantial: The Star, Orion, and Sirius
A real, pre-Christian Egyptian tradition: Orion's Belt as a pointer toward Sirius, whose heliacal rising marked the Nile flood, tied to Osiris and Isis. Genuinely documented, genuinely old. What it is not: something the Gospel text itself states. Matthew names no constellation. This is a coherent parallel reading laid alongside the text, not a fact extracted from it — worth knowing, wrong to present as settled.
2. The Trap Is Fear, Not Ignorance
Baruch Spinoza, writing in 1670, in a country where he'd already been excommunicated for saying God and Nature were the same substance, opened his Theological-Political Treatise with a diagnosis that still holds: superstition is not caused by a lack of facts. It is "engendered, preserved, and fostered by fear."1 Tyranny, for Spinoza, does not require hiding information from people — it requires keeping them afraid, because a frightened mind reaches for certainty faster than it reaches for accuracy, and either kind of certainty (nothing is wrong, or everything is a conspiracy) serves control equally well.
This is the actual danger in researching institutional history, and it has nothing to do with how much you know. Someone who has memorized every documented fact about IG Farben's Nazi-era financing, Bayer's postwar leadership, and the DARPA proposal that DARPA itself rejected — and who reads that record with a racing pulse and a settled conviction that a single coordinated force runs the last century of history — has not escaped the mechanism Spinoza described. They have relocated inside it. Fear-driven certainty is fear-driven certainty regardless of which direction it points.
The tier system in Section 1 is not primarily an accuracy tool. It is a fear-management tool. Sitting with "circumstantial, unresolved" instead of collapsing it into "therefore they did it" or "therefore it's nothing" is the actual discipline — and it is a much harder discipline than reading more sources.
3. What You Actually Control
Epictetus opens the Enchiridion with the line this entire method rests on: "Men are disturbed not by things, but by the opinions about things."2 A recurring historical pattern — power concentrating, fear used as an instrument, institutions outliving the ideologies that built them — is not something any individual reader can stop by recognizing it. What is entirely theirs to control is the recognizing itself, and what they do with the recognition.
Melos and Meros — the Distinction That Does the Work
Marcus Aurelius draws a distinction between being a meros — a mere part, carried along passively as pieces of a body are carried along by the whole — and a melos, a limb, consciously contributing to the organism it belongs to.3 Applied here: the person who absorbs dark historical facts and becomes more anxious, more isolated, more certain of a hidden hand behind everything, has become a meros of the pattern — swept along by it emotionally even while believing they've seen through it. The person who recognizes the same pattern and responds with steadiness rather than dread has become a melos — conscious, contributing, undisturbed. Same information. Opposite relationship to it.
4. The Deeper Frame
There is a still older reframe available, and it changes what "the devil" is doing in a document like the Book of Jubilees, where a figure named Mastema negotiates with God for permission to keep a fraction of the fallen spirits active on earth.4 Read as literal cosmic history, it's unsettling — a deity haggling with an adversary. Read as personified language for something else — the recurring challenge that forces consciousness to choose, generation after generation, whether to grow or to freeze — it becomes something closer to what Spinoza himself argued about miracles: ancient writers describing a real pattern in the only vocabulary available to them, not a literal transaction.5 On that reading, "Babylon" recurring across Nebuchadnezzar, Rome, IG Farben, and whatever wears its shape next is not a countdown to a scripted ending. It is the same test, offered again, to whichever generation is paying attention.
The undisturbed mind is not an uninformed one.
Nothing above argues for looking away. Fritz ter Meer really did chair Bayer's board. The Beutner study really did find what it found. The pattern really does recur. What determines whether researching any of this leaves a person sharper or shakier is not how much they uncover — it's whether they can hold "this is real and unresolved" without needing it to resolve into either dismissal or dread. That capacity is trainable. It is, in fact, the actual subject of this article, and it was worked out by people using stone tablets and quill pens, long before anyone had a word for what we now call a conspiracy theory.
